Why Procrastination Is Costing Your Business More Than You Think (And How to Finally Break the Cycle)
As entrepreneurs, we're rarely short of ideas.
In fact, most coaches, consultants and experts have the opposite problem.
A notebook full of ideas.
A course that's half-built.
A book with three completed chapters.
A podcast they've been meaning to launch.
A lead magnet that's almost finished.
The real challenge isn't coming up with great ideas—it's consistently finishing them.
That's exactly what I explored with my latest guest, Robin J. Emdon, on Podcast Profits Unleashed.
Robin is an accountability coach, author of Get Resultsology, and someone who has spent years studying why intelligent, capable people procrastinate. His message is both refreshing and reassuring:
Procrastination isn't laziness. It's emotional.
That one insight has the power to change how you approach your business forever.
The Biggest Myth About Procrastination
Most people assume procrastination is a discipline problem.
"If only I were more motivated."
"If only I managed my time better."
"If only I had more willpower."
Robin challenges all of these assumptions.
According to him, procrastination happens because our brains naturally avoid discomfort. When a task feels overwhelming, uncertain or emotionally uncomfortable, our instinct is to move towards something that feels easier.
Checking email.
Watching YouTube.
Scrolling social media.
Tidying your office.
Even working on lower-priority tasks can become a form of procrastination if you're avoiding the work that really matters.
The irony?
While those activities may feel productive in the moment, they often move us further away from our biggest goals.
Why Accountability Works Better Than Motivation
One of my favourite parts of our conversation was Robin's explanation of accountability.
Think about this.
How often have you cancelled work for a paying client?
Probably never.
Yet how many times have you postponed writing your book, recording your podcast or launching your programme?
The difference isn't ability.
It's accountability.
We're naturally wired to honour commitments we've made to other people.
Robin explained that motivation gets us started, but accountability helps us keep going.
That's where real momentum begins.
Momentum Beats Perfection
One of the biggest traps entrepreneurs fall into is waiting until everything feels perfect.
The perfect website.
The perfect logo.
The perfect offer.
The perfect time.
Unfortunately, perfection usually becomes another form of procrastination.
Momentum, however, is created through consistent action.
One email.
One podcast interview.
One client conversation.
One chapter.
One video.
Every small action builds confidence because progress creates belief.
Waiting creates doubt.
Your Brain Is Trying to Protect You
Robin also introduced a fascinating concept from neuroscience.
When our brains perceive something as difficult or threatening, they naturally try to protect us by steering us towards activities that feel safer or more rewarding.
That explains why watching one episode of your favourite series suddenly feels more appealing than writing your sales page.
Understanding this doesn't excuse procrastination.
It explains it.
And once you understand what's happening, you can begin responding differently.
Instead of asking:
"Why am I so lazy?"
You start asking:
"What emotion am I trying to avoid?"
That simple shift changes everything.
Progress Is Built One Decision at a Time
One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is that success isn't built through occasional bursts of motivation.
It's built through consistent follow-through.
Every successful entrepreneur has moments where they don't feel like doing the work.
The difference is they don't allow those feelings to make every decision.
They create systems.
They build accountability.
They develop momentum.
And over time, those small daily actions create extraordinary results.
