How to Turn Podcast Interviews Into Clients Without Giving Away More Information
By Karen Roberts | Podcast Profits Unleashed
You've just finished a podcast interview.
The host tells you how brilliant it was. You shared your best advice, told your story, and answered every question.
Then the episode goes live.
You share it on social media. A few people like your post.
And that's it.
No new conversations. No enquiries. No clients.
So you decide you need to get booked on more podcasts.
But what if that's not the problem?
What if the real issue is that your podcast content isn't giving people a reason to take the next step?
Why Giving Value Doesn't Always Create Clients
We've all heard the advice.
Give loads of value. Share your best tips. Show people how much you know.
And there's nothing wrong with being generous.
But here's what I've learned from working in podcasting.
Information isn't transformation.
Think about how much free information is available today.
You can watch YouTube videos, ask AI questions, and download free guides on almost any subject.
Yet people still pay coaches, consultants, and experts.
Why?
Because information isn't always what they're missing.
Sometimes they need to understand why their current approach isn't working.
Sometimes they need someone to question an assumption they've never thought to challenge.
And that's where your podcast content becomes powerful.
Stop Answering the Wrong Question
Here's something I often see.
A coach tells me they need more podcast bookings.
I ask why.
They say they need more visibility.
I ask why again.
They tell me they want more clients.
Now we're getting somewhere.
But here's what I really want to know.
What happened after their last ten interviews?
Did anybody get in touch?
Did they build relationships with the hosts?
Did they have a clear next step for listeners?
Did anyone buy anything?
Because if they don't know what happened, getting booked on another ten podcasts might not change a thing.
Maybe the real problem isn't the number of interviews.
Maybe it's what happens during and after them.
See the difference?
I haven't given them another list of podcast booking tips.
I've helped them look at the problem differently.
And that's what I want you to do for your listeners.
How to Use Stories That Change Beliefs
One of the best ways to help people think differently is through storytelling.
Not a polished biography.
Not a story designed to make you sound impressive.
A real experience that changed how you understood something.
When I first got involved in podcasting, I didn't have a grand strategy.
After running my first summit, I was invited onto a radio station.
That led to my own show, eventually taking over the station, building a podcast network, and working with other podcasters.
Over time, I noticed something.
People could have fantastic exposure and still struggle to turn that visibility into income.
That made me question whether visibility was really the answer.
And it led me to look more closely at what happens before, during, and after a podcast conversation.
That's the power of a real story.
It allows people to reach their own conclusions.
Prepare Your Podcast Content Without Scripting Everything
You don't need to plan every word of your next interview.
In fact, I wouldn't recommend it.
A script can stop you from listening properly and responding naturally.
Instead, prepare three things:
The current belief: What does this audience believe that's keeping them stuck?
The new belief: What would help them see the situation differently?
The story: What real experience could help them make that shift?
Then decide on one clear next step.
If somebody wants to continue learning from you, where should they go?
Don't overwhelm them with five different options.
Make the next action simple.
Your Podcast Content Should Build Trust
Your goal isn't to make listeners think you're the cleverest person they've ever heard.
Your goal is to help them understand their own situation better.
When somebody feels understood, they're more likely to want to learn more.
And you don't have to explain your entire solution to make that happen.
You simply need to help them see the problem clearly and understand that another approach is possible.
That's what strategic podcast content does.
It builds trust without turning the conversation into a sales pitch.
